On Chess : Two Americans dominate to lead the Grand Chess Tour standings

Saturday, June 30th, 2018

The first two events of the 2018 Grand Chess Tour (GCT) took place in Leuven from June 12-16 and Paris from June 20-24. After 10 grueling days full of brilliance, blunders and inspiring chess, two Americans are leading the tour, putting themselves in an excellent position to qualify for the finals in London at the end of the year. The Americans — Wesley So and Hikaru Nakamura — are no strangers to the winner’s circle in the Grand Chess Tour. So was completely unstoppable in 2016 when he won two of the tournaments and finished second in one — just behind world chess champion Magnus Carlsen — thus winning the entire tour. So’s victory in Leuven this year was the most dramatic one yet in GCT’s history. Both Paris and Leuven consist of nine rounds of rapid followed by 18 rounds of blitz. So completely dominated the rapid portion of Leuven, finishing …

Swedish Chess Championships 2018

Saturday, June 30th, 2018

All classes: Championship, Masters Elite, Masters, Seniors 50+, Seniors 65+, Juniors The Swedish Chess Championship takes place from 30 June to 8 July 2018 in Stockholm, Sweden. Players receive 90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes to the end of the game, plus a 30-second increment starting from move one.
The preparations are ready and now the nearly 600 players are invited to the spa town of Ronneby. H?kan Jalling, chairman of the competition committee, believes that many of the chess players will have a positive surprise.

“It’s amazingly beautiful here in Ronneby and the place where we have the SM competitions,” he says. Really very nice.

Ronneby Brunn is an attractive holiday resort known for the great beautiful Brunnsparken. The resort adjacent to the hotel expects 70,000 guests each year. Here you are really spoiled as a guest, spa treatments, massage, swimming, sunbathing

Sweden flagThe Swedish champion class: Hans Tikkanen-Axel Smith, Jonathan Westerberg-Oskar Von Bahr, Nils Grandelius-Erik Blomqvist, Jung My Seo-Tiger Hillarp Persson and Jonny Hector-Pia Cramling. The championship elite: Fredrik Lindh-Jan Lundin, Michael Wiedenkeller-Jan-Olov Lindh, Tom Rydstr?m-Harald L?gdahl, Andreas Landgren-Erik Malmstig and Ari Ziegler-Johan Furhoff. Junior SM: Ludvig Carlsson-Milton Pantzar, Emanuel Sundin-Axel Berglind, Leo Crevatin-Kaan K?c?ksari, Isak Storme-Alfon Emmoth and Hampus S?rensen-Andr? Forsberg.

Overcoming champion Hans Tikkanen is white against Axel Smith in the first round of this year’s SM competitions. The draw to the SM groups was conducted in the commentary room for a live audience on site and on the Swedish Chess Union’s Youtube channel. Favorite Nils Grandelius meets Erik Blomqvist as white while Hans Tikkanen is already waiting for around 3, then with Grandelius with the white plays.

“For some strange reason, I always meet Erik with the white plays,” says Nils Grandelius with a laugh right after the lottnigen.

The atmosphere among the participants was easy and happy. Neither Erik Blomqvist nor Nils Grandelius think the drawing really is so important.

“No, I always have only the next party in front of my eyes, just know my next opponent,” says Nils Grandelius. Certainly it’s important to play the most white parties, but not so it’s crucial.

Dvorkovich announces ticket, Ilyumzhinov withdraws

Saturday, June 30th, 2018

On 29th June, the press conference of Arkady Dvorkovich took place in Moscow. The candidate for FIDE President in particular highlighted his goals and objectives and announced his ticket.

“I have recently told about my plans to run for FIDE President and today I officially confirm it. The necessary documents will be forwarded to FIDE Secretariat by July 3rd”, says Arkady Dvorkovich. “The support from the RCF and other federations was asked, and I am grateful to my colleagues from the Russian Chess Federation who backed me up almost unanimously. The goal of my press conference is to inform the chess community about my plans, why and with whom I am running for FIDE President”.

According to Arkady Dvorkovich, his team consists of Deputy President Bachar Kouatly (France), Vice-Presidents Mahir Mammedov (Azerbaijan) and Julio Granda Zuniga (Peru), General Secretary Sewa Enyonam Fumey (Togo), and Treasurer Zhu Chen (Qatar).

“I will promote chess and make contracts regardless the FIDE presidential elections’ outcome”, adds Arkady Dvorkovich. “There are companies which will invest in chess development. I have an experience in the organization of chess competitions, for example, Tal Memorial. It requires a fair amount of money and an enormous work, – is there a substitute for it? Of course, it is, but it all depends on a team, and I have something to offer. I don’t consider anyone as a rival, because we all have one goal to develop chess in the world, that’s why the one who wins shall unite everyone. Georgious Makropoulos has a great experience in the work in FIDE, Nigel Short is very famous in the world of chess, but I hope that our arguments but I hope that our arguments prevail in the end”.

Shortly after the press conference, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov stated for Interfax that he decided to withdraw from the race for the FIDE presidency and is supporting Dvorkovich bid.

The FIDE Presidential elections takes place during the FIDE Congress in Batumi, Georgia, on October 3.
