Matlakov and Bodnaruk win St. Petersburg Rapid Cup

Grandmasters Maxim Matlakov and Anastasia Bodnaruk are the winners of the St. Petersburg Rapid Cup final, which was held on 28-29th September at the Overtime Chess Club.

After the preliminary qualification earlier this month, 32 men and 16 women gathered this weekend for the final knockout event.

GM Maxim Matlakov beat GM Daniil Linchevski 1,5-0,5 in the final match to claim the Cup in men’s section.

The women’s final had an exciting finish when Anastasia Bodnaruk won the Armageddon game against Dina Belenkaya to take the top prize in this section.

Koneru dominated Tashkent

Grandmaster Humpy Koneru drew Olga Girya in the last round of the FIDE Women Grand Prix in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, for the convincing overall victory with 8,0/11 points.

Her closest rival Harika Dronavalli, also from India, was defeated by Zhao Xue.

Kateryna Lagno and Bela Khotenashvili used the opportunity to move ahead to the shared second place by scoring against Guliskhan Nakhbayeva and Antoaneta Stefanova respectively.

Local representative Nafisa Muminova concluded the event with a forfeit due to phone ring.

Saying Good Bye To An Old Friend

This incredible photograph was taken by John Chaney as part of the 2012 National Geographic Traveler photo contest. Chaney wrote that the female elephant in the image, which was taken in 2007, stood guard over the body of her friend for hours to pay her respects, chasing off birds and predators. She then wrapped her trunk around the other’s tusk in a heartbreaking goodbye.

London Classic will pit England’s top six chess players against the world’s elite

England’s top six chess players will take on the world elite in a new format of the 2013 London Classic, the UK’s most popular audience event. The Classic at Olympia in mid-December will have one-hour rapid games instead of the classical five-hour sessions of previous Classics. Sixteen players will compete in four groups, followed by knock-out mini-matches. The world chess champion, Vishy Anand, and world No2, Vlad Kramnik, head the list, which also includes the all-time No1 woman, Judit Polgar, and, making his Classic debut, Italy’s highly rated Fabiano Caruana. England’s chess team is led by the former world title finalists Michael Adams and Nigel Short and has the inventive Luke McShane plus the rising young grandmasters Gawain Jones and David Howell.
