Sanan Sjugirov of Russia was equal first at the world junior but lost on tie break. He played a couple of nice endgames, the first of which I will show today. Opposite coloured bishops can often give the endgame a drawish character, but here (see main illustration) White is effectively a king up. Can you see how he forced the win? Answer below. September FIDE rating list – Carlsen, Topalov, and Anand in top 3, Aronian climbs to 4th

FIDE published the September rating list. Due to summer inactivity, Carlsen, Topalov, and Anand preserve the positions they had in the July FIDE rating list. Aronian did not play a rated game as well, but climbed to 4th. Judit Polgar continues to lead the women standings, with full 89 ELO points ahead of the second.

The Baku Open took place 23rd-31st August 2010. Gata Kamsky in spite of a loss to Rauf Mamedov secured victory alone with 7.5/9 half a point clear of the field. Games from the final round are not complete.
