The official July 2010 FIDE rating list has been published and it confirms Magnus Carlsen as the world #1 with his highest rating yet of 2826 Elo.
Only the great Garry Kasparov has ever achieved a higher rating, with his peak being 2851 Elo back …

A chess lesson from the late Vasily Smyslov

How did the great Russian grandmaster win this game? Vasily Smyslov, the former world chess champion who died in March, was often described as a master of the endgame and brilliant positional player, but great chess players are able to change their style according to the demands of the position. I’ve been going through his games and found strategic masterpieces but also blistering attacking play. Earlier in this game he sacrificed a piece to activate his forces and followed up by advancing his h-pawn – one of my favourite attacking methods. But it takes skill to finish the game. 3rd Mediterranean Boys and Girls Chess Championships – 31st August 2010 to 8th September at Giannoulis Hotels on Crete, Greece

As a result of the initiative of Mr Sakis Kouvatsos, MCA Treasurer, the Mediterranean Chess Association is please to announce that it will be starting once again to organise the Mediterraean Junior Championships. The tournament is being sponsored by Giannoulis Hotels and Resorts who have also guaranteed the event for three years.

Italian Chess Championship Semifinal – IM Denis Rombaldoni wins the tournament, five qualify for the Final

IM Sabino Brunello, IM Danyl Dvyrny, IM Axel Rombaldoni and IM Pierluigi Piscopo shared the second with 6.5 points each. These five players qualify to join GM Lexy Ortega, GM Michele Godena and IM Carlo D’Amore in the lineup for the Final of the Italian Championship, will will be held from 22nd November to 4th December in Siena.

July FIDE rating list – Carlsen leading, three players above 2800

July FIDE rating list has been published and Magnus Carlsen continues to lead the world chess ranking. For a fourth consecutive time Carlsen is rated number one, after January (ELO 2810), March (2813), and May (2813), he sets his own personal record of 2826 in the July rating list. The result came after the successful performance at Kings Tournament, where he gained the impressive 13 points after a +5 score.
